View Full Version : Dr J & Mr. H as an analogy about British Empire?

So. I have an idea for an essay that would say Stevensons Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is an analogy of the British Empire during the Victorian Era.
Some vague points:
--the child knocked down by the juggernaut, Mr Hyde, is child labor
--the lack of women characters is shows the lack of voice women had in society
--Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hydes actions are covered up/ignored by his friends, a lawyer and a scientist--people who should know better
--the eventual suicide of Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde is an analogy to the rise of the working class and the fall of Englands colonies

I have some other ideas, but for the sake of being brief....
I don't know a whole lot about British history or about Stevenson, so any ideas/discussion/corrections would be helpful.
Thanks in advance!!
