I have read a number of works by Hesse through the years and I must say some seem to build on a type of story telling revolution that should have continued after the authors death. 'Siddhartha' has this type of placid style that has been considered Biblical in nature, though that is somewhat of a misinterpretation. A better description might be, a type of prose literature that revives ancient story telling in some ways. Having a fairly fixed volition and pace throughout the prose that stays suspended with intrigue and leads to a vitrue and/or moral discovery. Hesse wrote other works which are very akin to this type of prose, namely 'Narcisuss und Goldmund' and the three final tales of 'The Glass Bead Game'. It is a shame that other writers haven't picked up on this type of smooth almost mechanical, but always enlightening style.
