View Full Version : Favorite Logical Fallacies

Finally, a thread dedicated to the discussion of amusing logical fallacies!

I would like to introduce a widely commited fallacy that I do not believe has a name yet: the one where you accuse your opponent of a logical fallacy that they are not commiting.
Socrates: All men are mortal. I am a man. Therfore I am mortal.
Plato: That's ridiculous. That's like saying "All pocketwatches have two hands. I have two hands. Therefore I am a pocketwatch."
Socrates: You idiot. The pocketwatch won't even be invented until 1800 years after your death. If this doesn't have a name yet, I suggest the 'meta-fallicy'.

But the best internet logical fallicy by far is the reducio ad Hitlerum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_Hitlerum). For the convenience of those who are planing to use that one on me in the future, I present the complete list of things that I have in common with Hitler:

1. Germanic ancestry
2. Admiration of the film King Kong
3. Vegetarianism
4. Silly Moustaches
5. Both are lousy painters
6. Both have seen The Great Dictator twice

Did you watch "The Great Dictator" twice just to say that?

No, actually I only found that Hitler ever watched it after I had seen it the second time. I may have to see it again just to make that list a bit shorter. It's a brilliant film.

On the contrary.Watching made me say;not that saying made me watch.

more fallacies:

I think therefore i am,
i think of God,
therefore he exists.

All cats are animals
All dogs are animals
Therefore all cats are dogs
