Hello, im practising some essays for my exams coming up and would like to know very briefly what you would write in your essay if you were given the following question:

"What does dickens make you feel about Pip's life before money gives him independence. Remember to support your ideas from the text."

Any help would be appreciated.

Well Pip kind of goes from contentment, to longing for life as a gentleman. When he gets his wish, it doesn't fulfill him. In the climax of the book, Pip finds that self-sacrifice gives satisfaction. He goes broke, which causes him to turn to hard work and an honest life. He has finally found true satisfaction.

I'm not so sure if money gives him independence. A train is only free when confined to train tracks. Pip lives a sad life as a young boy, he is picked on, and his sister is harsh. Miss Havisham and Estella bring shame and dissatisfaction into his life.
