I've tossed an apple at you; if you can love me,
take it. Give me your girlhood in exchange.
If you think what I hope you won't, though,
consider how briefly its beauty is going to last.

but i can't figure out the meaning of this poem ascribed to Plato....can anyone help me out?? :(

Perhaps her thought is of the exchange being poor

Then Plato's return is that our time is more so

If not, then it is my wit

Why can't the apple just simply be a desciption of his love? He hopes she will reciprocate, though if she goes the other way (which he hopes she won't), his love will die and lose beauty just as quickly as an apple will rot. (?) Though it seems more physical as he uses the word "girlhood".

fast opinion:

apple-his love. in exchange he wants her virginity. but there's something about him--ex. social status that she doesn't want, particularly being rich. maybe he guy really loves girl and what guy wants is to ensure her love exists by devirginizing her. maybe girl only likes guy for his wealth.

hope it makes sense!
