Great Expectations got my vote, simply because I have a copy at home and it's not so thick. Furthermore, I think I once saw a movie (starring Ethan Hawke) that intrigued me and was called Great Expectations and I'd like to compare with the book
On the other hand, I wouldn't mind David Copperfield either, it has interesting opening lines.

Any novel by Dickens other than A Tale Of Two Cities because I have already read it. Though I liked it a lot, but I am not in a mood to re-read anything.

Still have Oliver Twist waiting to be read (I know, it's a shame...). I read David Copperfield years ago, can't really remember it.

I won't vote, only mayby read with you when it becomes Oliver Twist. I know I won't have that much time in October since I have to finish my MSc.-thesis....

Of the two I haven't read (Old Curiosity Shop and Little Dorrit) the former is more towards the top of my list, so it gets my vote. All books on that list are excellent and are worth reading/re-reading. I wouldn't mind re-reading David Copperfield, because I read it when I was too young to get much out of it and remember not liking as much as I would if I read it now..... but still, Old Curiosity Shop it is

Oh, vote for David Copperfield. You were too young to have read it. Plus it will have a chance to win while the other two probably don't.

That is true, but it's too late to recast a vote. However, I do encourage people to vote for David Copperfield if you are not sure what to vote for. Great Expectations is amazing, but I just re-read it recently, so....

I think that Our mutual friend is the best dickens I've read. To me Dickens is a constant reminder of the world around me as I work in London in the area he wrote about most - I work opposite the 3 cripples (now the One tun) and just 50 metres from Bleeding Heart yard and for me to explore these areas after having read his stories make them even more interesting.

For me, it has to be Tale of Two Cities. The beginning just sucks you straight in and the sinister clicking of Madame Dufarge's knitting needles is something worthy of Hitchcock!

Me too! I want to read the Bleak House because number one: I like the sound of the title--Bleak House--isn't it cool? :D

Because number two: I have already read Hard Times, Nicholas Nickleby, A Tale of Two Cities; and I have tried to read Oliver Twist too, but it was the one which I found very boring.

Hi Nossa, welcome to litnet!

I don't have the poll closed for me. It can't happen before the start of October. It has something to do with your post count, I guess. A member less than 200 posts (or was it 100?) can not vote. But of course, you can take part in the discussion and read books with us.

Welcome to the Forum! :)

In order to be able to vote/nominate in the Book Club, members need to have at least 50 posts (not too many if you start visiting the General Chat and Games sections, believe you me! ;)). If you get your posts counts up before the end of the month, you can vote for the Dickens book you would like to read as well (and nominate an author for the next year!): http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18930

You can find more about the Book Club procedures and rules here. (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4104)

If you have any further inquiries, please do not hesitate to PM me. :)

Saw David today while at the library and borrowed it just in case and was surprised to discover that it is a very long book (mine is 870 pages). Wonder how I managed it so many times as a kid. Of course I read only the translation in those days so they might have done some 'editing'.

My copy of David Copperfield has 1238 pages  Must be the large print...Isn't there a page restriction for Book Club nominations ? But then, inveterate bibliophils don't really need to sleep between reading, do they ? :D

Hmmm, this fits in with my effort to read everything by Dickens this year. I just finished Bleak House (finally) a couple of weeks ago, it is good but took me a while to get into because of the 2 narrators.
Next up on my list is Pickwick Papers.

I think I once saw a movie (starring Ethan Hawke) that intrigued me and was called Great Expectations and I'd like to compare with the book

I had the misfortune to see that version as well, complete and utter tosh, led me to wonder if they had even bothered to read the book.

Hard Times is just not funny.

What? how can anyone not find Hard Times funny. It is Dickens at his satirical best.

I had the misfortune to see that version as well, complete and utter tosh, led me to wonder if they had even bothered to read the book.

Hm, I had (and still have) no clear idea what the book was about when I saw the movie, and I didn't expect it to be a close adaption of the book, as I don't expect Pip to become a painter of modern art in a Dickens book :) But nevertheless, I'd like to compare where there are ideas or motives transformed, where the characters resemble, etc.
But if, as you say, kilted, there are not many detectable links whatsoever, it's no use re-watching the movie and comparing.
But I'd like to read the book anyway :D

Great Expectations - Has a melancholy ending
