What amazes and pleases me most is the variety of styles, themes and techniques we encounter with each selection. I think the members of this Forum is a talented bunch :)

I'm a little bit mystified though... with eight authors this time, why are there only four votes so far? Are authors afraid to vote or just embarrassed to vote for themselves and unwilling to vote for anyone else?

Just a question.

If at the time of submission, the story is still unpublished (if it's submitted in the early part of the year) but is later published during the year, will it be disqualified for the finals in November? (Assuming it makes it there) :D

While we're on the subject, I believe that technically, availability online in this manner qualifies as first online publication.

Arg! It's going to be hard for me to find time to read these! I'm training a new person to take over my job and then I go back to school! Nooooooo....

While we're on the subject, I believe that technically, availability online in this manner qualifies as first online publication.

I think it depends on what print magazine or internet mag you're submitting your story to.

Some have very stringent guidelines and won't consider a story which has been entered onto an online writers' forum. They count that as being published.

Most of the magazines I've had luck with are a bit more relaxed. They know that a lot of writers post their stories on workshops and sites to get feedback and to improve their writing. They only count a story as being 'published' if it's an actual magazine it's appeared in.

Also a lot of on-line places copyright the story to the author anyway, so that story is still yours to change or do whatever with you chose. Now most magazines copyright to the magazine, so you would have to get permission from the magazine to republish your own story if, say you decided to put out an anthology of your work. Since all I have ever published are my Shadow short stories on http://www.spaceports.com/~deshadow/ (look under Two-Minute Mysteries I'm due one published this weekend!), I would be safe.

If at the time of submission, the story is still unpublished (if it's submitted in the early part of the year) but is later published during the year, will it be disqualified for the finals in November? (Assuming it makes it there) :DWe require the stories entering this competition must not have been published before or during the competition (in online or actual magazines). Since this is a cyber medium, we have very little chance of checking the authenticity of the stories and preventing plagiarism if they are published before.

Those stories which have been published before and their writers will be disqualified automatically.

Aye, but the question is not pertaining to either publishing elsewhere (ie: in a magazine or online somewhere else) nor to the eligibility to the original competition. It is referring to the technical catch-22 of participating in the finals of this competition. If it is unpublished in the August elimination, but consequently published by LitNet itself (as it/they is/are in this very self-same thread in messages #1 and #2), then does it qualify or is it disqualified when the final, end-of-year round of competition occur?

Those stories which have been published before and their writers will be disqualified automatically. If a story goes through the finals and gets published elsewhere during the finals time, it will be disqualified as it will have been published during the competition.

However, they will not be disqualified for taking part in the eliminations of LitNet (then, no story would qualify for the finals as they will all have been published on here). I think Adelheid's question is refering to stories which appear elsewhere.

Thanks. My question was actually answered by your reply to Kelly Sprout- but as it has been replied to, it is of no consequence now. :)

If the author posts the story in his/her blog, is it considered published online? I think so right? But I'd like to be really sure. :D Thanks for your help, Scheherazade. :thumbs_up

sorry, I tend to forget that trivial worldy things such as the season can have an influence on human behaviour :)
i find it hard to vote... sometimes the stories I like best are not the objectively most well-written ones...
we should have a list of 150 criteria that everyone has to stick to in making up their mind :) heheh just joking :)

Not fair! I wake up extra early to read these and vote before I have to get homework done, and you guys give me THESE great stories to choose between!?!?

There were definitely 2 that I really, really, really, wanted to vote for, but the rest were also so impressive that I think with a little editing I would have wanted to vote for all 8!

I guess my vote might just seal the deal...

I really liked it, but for reasons that I will not yet mention (no discussion of stories allowed until the poll is closed rule) I voted for the one I did....but I still really, really liked it and want to commend the author! lol...

(I figure my vote on the other story is commendation enough...)

~blush~ thanks. Let me just say that the greatest inspiration often comes from real-life experiences, teehee :D

Pendragon, I agree with you that it can be disheartening for those who didn't get any votes, but honestly all of the stories were great and I think that it's not something to be upset about...look at how many people commented at how hard it was to vote! It's the collection of so many good stories put next to eachother that made it so difficult :D

Virgil
09-01-2006, 02:15 PM
I too thought it was a good story, Shan. Like I said, each month the stories got better and better.

Why, thank you.
We wrote Evolution.

It was a difficult vote. We were between Airborne Honour and The Cellar but finally chose the first one.

And Robin, we know that you wrote Airborne Honour.
a) because you have already posted it in the General Writing section
and
b)because of the eeeevil qualities of MWORD
But we hope that it didn't influence our vote.

RobinHood3000
09-01-2006, 02:40 PM
Thanks -- I was aware of that, and changed it in the version up for commentary. To be honest, I had rather hoped no one would think to look there, as I'm rather paranoid and was shocked when I realized.

Could you do me an enormous favor and remove the specific method of finding that information from your post?

And Scher, an absolutely huge, massive favor would be to make my previous entries no longer downloadable in the original elimination threads; I've posted updated versions of them in independent threads, anyway, and to be honest, I'm a bit nervous...

Perhaps I should have voted for my own, but I didn't think that was very honorable, so I chose another instead. Turns out I backed the winner, so not all was lost! (grin). Although at the time of voting, I eliminated my own from my mind and then selected the one I thought was best from the remaining choices, as the month wore on and I reread all of them several times, I slowly began to acknowledge that perhaps I had picked the best one even if I had included my own in the choices. Well done, to whoever wrote On Terrapin Pond.

Congratulations to the writer of 'On Terrapin Pond', who is the winner of August elimination.

Those entrants who would like to hear about others' thoughts on their stories can post their stories in individual threads.

You can now email your stories for the October elimination.

I would like to thank everyone who have taken part and/or taken the time to read and vote in the competition so far.
