I'm gonna say To the Lighthouse because I've never read any Woolf, but I'd definitely be up for East of Eden and The Name of the Rose.

I was planning to re-read To The Lighthouse. However I will wait for anyone to co-read it with me so that we can discuss it together. If anyone is interested then please let me know.

Since the member who nominated it will not be able to join us for the Summer Reading, we had to replace his nomination.

Virgil
06-14-2006, 12:54 PM
Well, I won't be reading East of Eden if it's selected. Although I would like to read it, I won't have time for such a long read. To The Lighthouse was actually my third choice.

wow, we have a tie. what happens if the poll ends on a tie? do we have another poll for like a day? and then see what the rusults are. cause that would be cool. Only of course if the tie remains. this is exciting. :brow:

thats right, shes a big one. To the lighthouse would be a much smaller read.

Scheherazade
06-14-2006, 06:23 PM
However, East of Eden would be a worthier read. :p

When I read Mrs D at university, I promised myself that I would never touch another Woolf book. I read Orlando since then, thanks to this Book Club and I really don't want to read another of *yawn* her books.

That was a bizarre book...and it wasn't really the fact that he suddenly wakes up one morning to find out he's a woman nor the fact that he lives for 300 or whatever years that bothered me, it was the fact that no one in his/her life seemed to think it was odd. If someone, just one person had said, "holy crap! You're a woman! That is so weird!", I think I would've been fine but they didn't, they all acted like it was just one of those things that happen sometimes. I've read To The Lighthouse so I'm not interested in reading it again, it was much less surreal than Orlando but still...not a book I have a need to read twice.

You need to give To The Lighthouse a chance. It's much better than Mrs. Dalloway. Trust me. TTLH is one of my all time favorite novels.

OOooooo!!! Pick us, pick us!!

Well, anyway, we did vote for East of Eden. We don't have an idea what it is about, but we have met with Woolfs writings and we think we want to challenge unknown monsters who might turn out as giant cute bunny-rabbits (like Frank!)(as opposed to known monsters)

Can we change our vote?

superunknown
06-15-2006, 11:35 AM
Is it possible to withdraw votes? I'm not going to be joining you during the summer reading poll as I already have to read Ulysses, Brothers Karamazov, and a few more stories for my AP Spanish lit class next year and won't have time for another one. I voted for To the Lighthouse, by the way.

behindblueeyes
06-15-2006, 05:52 PM
less than 1 hour.. maybe if it's a tie we should get rid of the books with no votes and have a revote that only lasts like a day or two...

Scheherazade
06-15-2006, 06:11 PM
Just to answer some of the questions:

- Unfortunately, it is not possible to change or withdraw votes as the software does not accommodate them.

- In case of a tie, I will pick one of the books which gets most votes to read.

Virgil
06-16-2006, 06:56 AM
UNFAIR!

Where in the rules does it say that Scher gets to pick in the event of a tie?

Well, then, I've got my own summer reading list. :p To you.

Asa Adams
06-16-2006, 10:45 AM
I don't understand. So Scheher picks the one with the most votes now? Well that doesn't really make any sense. maybe its, we all have a "day long poll" and which ever one gets most votes this way will be the winner?

still confused...

Scheherazade
06-16-2006, 10:56 AM
In case of a tie, I, as the Moderator of the Book Club, pick one of the books which gets the most votes. This has been the practise not only now but since the beginning of the Book Club.

Setting up another poll for another day is not very productive since not all the members will log on to the Forum during that day.

behindblueeyes
06-16-2006, 11:32 AM
okay then which wins. if its east of eden i may not do the reading and then only 6 people would actually have said they would but.. who wins?

Asa Adams
06-16-2006, 12:10 PM
Alright, i think understand....will you choose one book thats not in the tie, that has recieved the most votes? in this case "name of the rose"? which ever one you choose, i am sure we will all agree to read :D

Scheherazade
06-16-2006, 12:32 PM
Well, not exactly! (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17965) :D

Also, if you are short of time at the moment, please don't worry. Summer Reading is for the whole summer, which means we have three months to read and discuss the book.

How about "To the Lighthouse"? I didn't vote in time, but if I had, it would have broken the tie, putting the above in the lead with 8 - count 'em -, yeah, 8, votes. East of Eden is autumn reading.

Asa Adams
06-18-2006, 12:48 AM
except "to the lighthouse" would have been like a month reading, beacuse of its size. East of eden is the better choice because of length. It was a very good book. everyone will enjoy...i think.
