The Critic and the Muse

You wrote the poem in my class.
I knew that even as I was talking.
I knew too that you wrote as always,
About the sunlight gleaming on her hair
As she spoke about Shelley, Byron and Keats.
I was the teacher, she was the Muse.
That, I knew and even accepted.
But oh, the thoughtless cruelty of youth,
Did I HAVE to be your chosen critic too?
