I'm having more fun with the Chesterton intros than reading Dickens' books. They are long, rambling discussions touching on vastly unrelated topics and are utterly hilarious. Anyone connecting a formless Napoleonic battle with a mature potato in the same essay clearly touches genius, or opium. I find it remarkable when, after eight paragraphs, he actually mentions Dickens' work. I think Chesterton's "Appreciations and Criticisms of the Works of Charles Dickens" is going on my reading list...
