It comes from the all that dirt and oil that gets stuck in your pores. ;)

Do you read James Joyce (he's notoriously dirty, and he uses the 'omphalos' symbol all throughout Ulysses and Finnegans Wake)?

I was thinking dead skin cells. That doesn't explain how it is sterile one minute and not the next. Or for that matter, why it only accumulates in that orifice and not others.
I know Joyce is dirty. Bloom expelling his load, great.
As for it working, I suppose it depends on what you are trying to accomplish.
