Ok. I don't understand what this word means, I assume it is colloquialism. Does anyone know what this word means? [what it is to sit here alonger my dear boy and have my smoke, arter having been day by day betwixt four walls]

Looks like a typo to me!!!! Try "after" insted. :D :D

I don't think it is a typo... It is used in a few places in the book.

You are right - I went and checked - it is dialect in that case - but still 'after'.
