The opening chapter is essentially on of atmosphere. Dickens sets off many threads and we see Pips overactive imagination and his sense of helpless ness or vulnerability as an orphan. The start is typical Victorian gothic with its refs to darkness and a gibbet and the dead powerfully influencing the living.
