I love Little Women so much! This would be a good choice.

If I may inquire, how are the choices that make the ballot determined? Were these books nominated in a poll of some sort or... how does that work exactly?

Never mind that... I have just discovered the December Nominations thread.

[Shmeless advert]Urban fantasy is sometimes called fantasy for people who usually do not read fantasy.
It doesn't take place in mythical pseudomedieval place - it's plot is in a modern city.
You could also call it magical realism.
Charles de Lint is one of the best urban fantasy writers - some consider him the father of the genre.

There are a number of protagonists in "Someplace to be Flying" - Lily, a photojournalist, who is searching for information for the animal people in Newford slums.
Hank, an unlicenced taxi driver from these slums.
Katy, a young woman who has been kept in lunatic asylum by her parents for half her life because of her invisible friend - her twin sister who appeared in her early teens and who has just started a new life - in Newford, in this funny house with strange inhabitants called Aviary.
Jack Daw, a storyteller and a corbae - one of the First People, who was there when the world was created (so that Raven would have someplace to be flying)

So, vote for "Someplace to be Flying"[/Shameless advert]

I'm torn, lol. I wanted to read Little Women a few months ago, I'm still trying to get to finish Angels & Demons, and Tal's shamless advert's captivating... can I vote 3 times? :D

which version of little women would be reading??
the one that includes Good wives (the more normal edition nowadays I belive or the original one ending the chapter before meg gets married ???)
I love alcott wellk with the excveption of work; a story of experiance and Behind a mask; a woman's power.

As I ve always been a sucker for good prpaganda I think Im gona go with Tal's shamless advert :D

I have voted for Little Women because it's Christmasy (although we will have a Christmas reading)... and I have to re-read it again for my BBC reading! :D

11-09-2005, 08:43 AM
Scher, What about Christmas Carol? Isn't it more Christmasy?

Scheherazade
11-09-2005, 06:33 PM
A Christmas Carol is not in the list and also, last year the Book Club read it :)

Soon we will have a nomination-voting thread for our Christmas Reading.

Jay

Can we not read Gatsby? But, for example, Someplace To Be Flying? :D
Just checked... Little Women is not too student-friendly in time of exams & essays :p

'Someplace To be Flying...'

Edit:

some consider him the father of the genre.

Unless Mr. De Lint was born in the 1800's, that cannot be the case.

Jay
11-14-2005, 11:23 AM
Now all we need is two more votes for Someplace To Be Flying... and no one else to vote for Gatsby :p... game anyone? :D

We are afraid that we are heavily misinformed.
Which urban fantasy writer was born in the 1800 s?

I'm going to join this month, unless I can get the November book read soon.

I also fell for the shameless advert.

Jay

YES! A few more votes wouldn't hurt still... anyone else feels like reading anything else than a classic? I'm sure Papaya's waiting for the last hours to cast her vote... just don't be too late ;)... Anyone else? One vote lead is nice, but still not too secure... so... we're still waiting for more! Geeks and/or KitKats in our Live Chat pub for free! (well, just like everything else but that's beside the point ;))

Sheesh, it's not that I forget.......ok sometimes I forget but most of the time I wait too long. Actually my plan has never really worked, My books never win (and yes that is a bit of a whine), perhaps I should vote as sooner.

phtt! Silly me! I jumped the gun and went ahead to order Someplace to be Flying from my library, but I just realized that the poll hasn't even closed yet! :P

If something I own wins, I will join in, but I have too many books to buy new stuff.

400th post!

Shea
11-20-2005, 09:43 PM
what happens if there is a tie?

Kiwi, my husband starts twitching whenever I talk of buying another book. As much as I would love to expand my own library, I've decided to borrow from the public one until our money is a bit freer. Just a suggestion. :)

*hugs for Shea and Kiwi* !!

There is a used bookstore in my backyard! *drooools* Well, my apartment looks out onto a parking lot, and there is a used bookstore in it, right next door. ...And another one across the street. (And a bookstore that sells nothing but politically-themed books just next to that! Don't think I'll be sharing any of those on here, though. :p ) Ah, paradise, thy name is Vermont.

That said... C'monnnn, Gatsby! I voted for "Cold Blood" to be neutral, and because it's what I want most. But if the "urban fantasy" book wins, methinks I'll be reading Capote anyhow.

11-20-2005, 11:06 PM

I would love if we would read Angels and Demons. It would get me motivated to finish it. I was rabid about it when I first started reading, but time interrupted my continuation of the novel. It is a really wonderful, suspenseful novel, I highly reccommend it.

Taliesin
11-21-2005, 12:27 PM
Highly suspenseful but you couldn't finish it and need something like Book Club to motivate you to finish it? We see...

Others than that: Emily! Welcome back!

*hugs for Shea and Kiwi* !!

You are back around! And still beating me in posts. lol Glad to see you.

Anyways, what I should say is that I have sooo many books to read, I don't want to get anything new until my pile gets down. That will take most of my life, lol. I say I won't buy anything, and then I do.

Hi Taliesin! Good to see you!

Kiwi -- Lucky you! I've always just read my father's books (he has just about every classic there is), but now I have to start building a library of my own. I don't have very many except ones for school, and a good chunk of those are from my class on war journalism.

Kiwi Shelf
11-22-2005, 07:39 AM
Oh, don't worry, I have plenty of the school thing covered as well, but I don't have a parents library to rely on, my mother is not a big reader, so I read my own stuff. I would safely say I have a library... I just need a better place to keep them. *dreams of own house complete with library* *sigh*

now i feel power... what should I do? Actually my choice is "little women" but as my vote is not gonna help it to win i think I better choose between The Great Gatsby and Someplace to be Flying.
Fantazy is not for me, should I vote for Gatsby? I know I can be killed here i better don't :D
