Leo tolstoy was teaching children in small school. sometimes he told them great stories, and one day when his students asked him to tell them story, he told them about russia-french war. when he told them, his students were so happy to hear that and they said "please write a story about it". Leo Tolstoy was happy because they liked it and he thought if he write a book about it.

i am sorry because my english is not perfact. but i hope that my information will help you to write your book. Leo Tolstoy is my favorite author. Good Luck!!!

The book is about Tolstoy, primararly. Each character is a bit of himself. It is really a form of autobiography. As to "why", well, why does anyone write anything?
