I am doing a paper comparing Roger Chillingworth to the devil. I struggled throughout the book :( Now I need specific quotes & chapters to provide examples for my point on the paper. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciated.

I apologize I did not reply to this thread yesterday, when posted, yoursunshine, but hopefully you managed to write something, and turn in the paper on time.
Comparing Roger Chillingworth to the classical concept of the devil, I think, sounds very valid and an easily-made comparison. Chillingworth, throughout his appearance in the novel, relies entirely on his deceit of calling himself a medical doctor, abandoning the wife he apparently "loves," and seems obsessed with discovering Hester Prynne's lover, and probably performing unspeakable kinds of cruel acts to him.
The classical approach to the devil seems defined by "his" crafty talent of deceiving others, utilizing a vast intelligence in a Machiavellian manner, to benefit "himself," abandoning others to whatever may come.
If you have not yet finished the essay, I would suggest browsing here (http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/scarlet/) (SparkNotes' commentary on Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter), here (http://www.sparknotes.com/poetry/paradiselost/) (SparkNotes' commentary on John Milton's Paradise Lost, which should have much to say on the approach of Satan), and here (http://www.sparknotes.com/poetry/inferno/index.html) (SparkNotes' commentary on Dante Alighieri's Inferno, which also ought to have much to say on Satan).
Good luck!
