View Full Version : The Troll 2005 World Tour

My troll (check out the avatar) is itching to see the world, but this year I can’t afford to trip over my own two feet, let alone escort Troll to some exotic destination. Therefore, I am giving you, the members of the Lit. Forums the opportunity to send Troll around the world.

Anyone who wants to host Troll for a portion of her tour is committing to the following:

Will provide their general location to me via PM so I can map out Trolls route in order to minimize postage expense for all participants.
Will contribute entries to Troll’s travel diary (which will accompany Troll through her journey). This entry can be as truthful or as fanciful as you like.
Will contribute either a photo, drawing, or some other souvenir to the journal representing their part of the world. Do you live in Paris? Pose Troll in front of the Eiffel Tower. Don’t have a camera? Draw Troll at a sidewalk café in Montemartre. Don’t want to visit the tourist traps? How about doing a postcard instead? Again, be creative and use your imagination.
Will be willing to incur the postage costs to send Troll to her next destination.
Will be willing to share their snail mail address with the person selected to send Troll to them.
Will receive the snail mail address of the person they are to send Troll to and live up to the responsibility being entrusted to them by receiving that address (no stalking, no spam, no sweepstakes entries, no bogus pizza orders).

By accepting these terms, you will get to enjoy about a week of Troll’s kind company, read the journal entries of all who hosted Troll before you, and be part of something that’s really meaningless in the long run and yet kinda cool.

Once Troll comes home to me, I will set up a blog so that everyone will get to read the complete journal and see all the photos, drawings and other souvenirs that Troll brings home with her.

Anyone interested in participating should post here over the next two weeks (I know some people are still figuring out where they will be over the summer). Then I will chart out Troll’s route and send her on her way.

Any questions, please contact me via PM.

I've had good luck with the Canadian postal service, packages seem to spend a lifetime at the border, but they do arrive.

Think about it?

Right! Okay! Count me in. Of course the Troll is welcome!! I'm planning the agenda already. We will take a motorcycle cruise into the Rocky Mountains (going to have to fashion her a little helmet), pick bugs out of each other's teeth, sip fine wines while picnicking along the banks of glacier fed rivers, and maybe get a Canadian flag tattoo............Is the troll a 'screamer or a bleeder??......

And yeah, I completely trust the Canadian postal service. Border delays may lengthen Troll's trip, but as she is on holidays I'm sure she won't mind.....

how cool!!! I love to send things! How big is the troll, just out of curiosity? (I need to plan how to take the pic LOL)...eheh when it will come back it will be in ahuge box... i especially like the part about the diary, if I get it right we need to write in the diary so we will see what people before us wrote, and get to see their handwritings and all... it's lovely!!!

So count me in, providing the troll can reach me before august or after mid-september...

Do I have to pm you ihrocks? You know where I am... I guess pms will be needed later for the addresses...

Jay

Relax, Nightshade!

Yes, you need to write or type and paste your typing in the journal pages (very low-tech I admit). The Troll travels about in her lovely little workout attire, and she's quite comfortable.

Anything that is part of the Troll's travels should go with her from place to place for all to enjoy, so they should be small and not too expensive -- postcards, matchbook covers, things like that. They can be tucked in the pages of her journal, or maybe I'll send a small plastic baggie with her for the "treasures" she collects along the way. The point is to let each person who is part of the journey enjoy what has come before, make their own unique contribution, and then pass the troll along.

So far, it looks like the itinerary is:

LA
Kansas
Michigan
Canada (two stops)
Philly
Iceland
UK (This is you) to Egypt back to UK
Denmark
Czech Republic
And
Wherever Koa ends up being by the time Troll is ready to reach her.

But that isn't around the world -- yet! How about you folks in India, Indonesia, China, Japan, Australia? Fancy a visit from an LA Troll?

I'd prefer to get the troll while I'm in Italy - here I know I'll be able to take care of her in the best of way and I pretty much know everything about the postal service, having been in the snail mail business for half of my life at least... I'm going to Russia in August and possibly stay until mid-September, but I'm not sure I trust the Russian postal service too much, it's rather slow... And if I'll live in a dormitory it might be hard to get mail, it would have maybe to go through many hands before reaching me... Getting it in Italy feels safer.

I don't think most people will need more than 3 or 4 days. 'Shade's situation is a bit unique, because it's a trip-within-a trip.

Actually, Trolley (that's the only name she has -- any suggestions?) has been to London and Bath. She loves England and would enjoy to seeing more of it.

In my experience, and with my business I ship overseas all the time, us air parcel post usually takes about 2-3 weeks. Some places are better, some places (like Canada) can be slower. I can drive to Canada in 2 hours and yet an air parcel post package I sent once took 4 weeks...

Global Express Mail can take less time, but still atleast a week I'd think.

Definitely do not do surface post, that's 2 months on a boat.

I'd also try to keep the cross-ocean jumps to a minimum, its quite expensive.

Oh ya, if you guys still want an Aussie, I know alot of them and I'm sure I could interest one of them.

Well I suppose that ihrocks' schedule will work in a way to make Troll (i like this name best) tour first the USA and then jump to Europe...or maybe she can come to Europe first then tour the States...if other continents are involved, I still think the Americas should come first, and then one continent at the time, it seems more convenient both economically and in terms of time and risk to lose the stuff (brrrrr...)

I love snail mail and in my experience I can tell you that sending stuff around Europe can be quite quick, the only troubles I've had have been in Hungary to Italy if you don't use air mail, and Macedonia to Italy is the slowest thing I've ever seen... but we have no Macedonians here...

Jay
06-06-2005, 05:45 AM
I gotta say the mail from the Czech rep to Aussie takes about 5-6 days, was pleasantly surprised to find that out as I thought it'll take about two weeks. Funny thing is that it takes about 4-5 days from Aussie to the Czech rep... and also that when you're sending a letter from one end of the town to another it can take just as long as if you were sendig it from Aussie :D

Nightshade

No flaw whatsoever, a kilt is not made of light material.

Anyway, seeing as the majority of you are for some insane reason inerested in seeing me in a kilt, I shall do my best to provide a picture of myself in one.

On another note, no self respecting scotsman wears anything under his kilt. On the whole we are quite stingy with regards to money and if we can avoid not buying something we generrally will.

It wouldn't happen to be this song would it?

The Scotsman Song

Well, a Scotsman clad in kilt once left a bar one evening fair,
And one could tell by how he walked that he'd drunk more than his share.
He fumbled 'round until he could no longer keep his feet.
Then he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street.

Ring ding diddle iddle i de o,
Ring die diddley i o.
He stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street..

About that time two young and lovely girls just happened by.
One said to the other with a twinkle in her eye.
See yon sleeping Scotsman so strong and handsome built.
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt.

Ring ding diddle iddle i de o,
Ring die diddley i o.
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt.

They crept up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be,
Lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see.
And there behold for them to view beneath his Scottish skirt,
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth.

Ring ding diddle iddle i de o,
Ring die diddley i o.
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth.

They marveled for a moment and then one said we must be gone.
Let's leave a present for our friend before we move along.
As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon tied into a bow,
Around the bonnie star the Scot's kilt did lift and show.

Ring ding diddle iddle i de o,
Ring die diddley i o.
Around the bonnie star the Scot's kilt did lift and show.

Now the Scotsman woke to nature's call and stumbled toward the trees.
Behind the bush he lifts his kilt and gawks at what he sees.
And in a startled voice he says to what's before his eyes,
Oh! lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won first prize.

Ring ding diddle iddle i de o,
Ring die diddley i o.
Oh! lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won first prize.

Trolley is en route. The kind folks at the US Postal Service say you may expect her Saturday or Monday. We had a little trouble finding a Troll Carrier that met with USPS "standards".

Nightshade

Oh will she keep the same "carrier " or will it change?

It's a pretty sturdy cardboard box, hopefully it can be recycled throughout the tour. There was room for her, her journal and her picture album, as well as any little knickknacky things people might add as she journeys.

Some chums and I did that with an envelope that we kept recycling. I can't remember who got it last, but they never sent it back to me. I can only hope they recycled it with someone else and that envelope is still out there moving around the world.

actually thats a pretty stupid q isnt it???
Will Trolley send virtual Post cards...
I thought it would be sort of fun for me at least as it will be an excuse to get on the internet in Egypt but the real Q would be where would it go
In this thread or one all byits onesome lonesome?

If people want to send postcards, I suppose they could post them here. At least, I don't see why not, but no ones obligated to do so -- however a brief note that Trolley has arrived would be nice.

Entirely up to you. I'm a touchy-feely person, so like actual photographs, but I'm sure most members of the tour have the technology to access a photo disk on their computers.

I hope you've enjoyed her company. I loved the first picture. :)

I have a certain indifference to appearing normal, but what I would suggest is if anyone questions you, briefly explain and then ask them to pose for a photo with Trolley. Either they'll play along like all nice people should, or you'll quickly be rid of them!

I never hide my strangeness, maybe that's why I don't have a boyfriend, or friends..... I can't hide myself, I make a scene in the middle of a mall, or start singing or something.... you'll read about my normal behaviour in the diary when trolley gets here....

Oh, that's too bad. :( But the goal was to get her to the UK in time to join Nightshade on a trip to Egypt ("See the Pyr-a-mids a-looong the niiile....." that's too good to pass up). Hello all,

We have visited the museum and are now in Herghada a popular Red Sea resort city and are going on a banana boat and learning to wind surf this afternoon. And tomorow we are going snorkling and visiting an Island!

Headless was very sad that Trolley didnt get to us in timebut is consolling her self by getting sun burnt and feasting on fish and non-alcholic malt drinks!
While Nights face persists in risisting changing colour!!!

4 more days here by the sea then we are off back to Cairo!!

OH...MY.....GOD!!!!! Trolly?? Lost???

I am patiently awaiting my turn at hosting the rubber. I had in fact projected in my own thoughts the possibility that Trolly may take an entire year to circumnavigate the 'Group'. Perhaps the current disappearance is entirely due to a vexing itch in dire need of scratching, as Ihrocks has suggested, such as a whim for a new tatoo, or a piercing, or a side trip into the wine country for a few weeks, or a new lust (much of life falls under this catagory) she felt compelled to explore. These are, of course, extremely good reasons not to call or write home, as one must fully experience, alone, a new sensation in order to obtain maximum data so as to pinpoint an experience's 'WoW' factor. So it goes............................................an d if nothing else is explained, and its a funny point, I should think, Trolly is in SOMEONE'S mail, somewhere.......

I can only imagine what someone would think, but on the practical side, I did, just in case, write my address in the first page of her journal so that she might return home if she did get misdirected.

That said, she has not returned home, so she's probably just up to mischief.

i just read thru this amazing thread today.
but whatever happened to trolly and why did the thread suddenly stop.
I cannot bear the thought she is out there somewhere in some jerk's apartment that works for the post office. why on earth didn't you put a search for in the newspapers or postoffices of each of your cities she went thru?
this is the worst. how can you just go on with your lives and not try to do something even if the case has grown rather cold?

Can you get someone to chanel the spirit of Sherlock Holmes in an effort to locate the lost "Trolly"? What heresy! Slap me in Scotland Yard! Holmes is, of course, immortal....

Trolly,
dear trolly where have you gone
did the posties abduct you
or are you lost in a throng?
Did you drink too much budweiser
forget Night was waiting for you?
or did a foolish keeper catch you
throw you into the zoo?

please, if you are a member of this forum trolly come forward,
come home.

Trolly Won't You Please Come Home

Lost some where in a London fog,
Feeling so all alone--
Follow the voices that are calling your name:
Trolly, won't you please come home?
Night is waiting, and Scher as well,
And so many others you've known--
You don't have to wander alone in the darkness
Trolly won't you please come home?
It's been a while since we saw your face,
But life hasn't been the same with you gone.
There is a candle in the window for you--
Trolly won't you please come home?
We spring to the window each time someone passes--
Was that you going by in the fog?
How long will you wander while our hearts are breaking?
Trolly won't you please come home?
Trolly, please come home... http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/liebe/mrstraetz.gif

Well I got a curious call yesterday. A scratchy gravelly little voice came online and the fellow told me he had been 'cruisin' the lit forums and came upon this one. He said to his absolute amazement he saw a thread about his very own step sister Trolly. He said his name was Den-Den the dwarf of no fixed address. He wanted to know"how badly" his little sister was being missed. I said er um I can't say it WAS last year and I didn't find out about it until just recently. Then he asked about the forum members that took it upon themselves to send his sister on an unscheduled vacation basically all over the world, where they 'affluent' in terms of liquid assests and so on.
I got suspicious of course and demanded he tell me more about himself and where he was calling from. I was quite sure I heard the noisy sound of workers in the background and someone saying something like"send those big ones up the pneumatic tube and be quick about it."
"Say are you phoning from a postoffice?" I asked but suddenly there was a hand over the phone or something and then muffled words and then the line went dead.
I just don't know what to think about all this.
Any thoughts?

Can trolls tell time? I thought them timeless? http://www.littlepeoplenetwork.com/SueBlog/trolldoll2.jpg

But with the growth in science and technology, when there can be robots who can do different tasks then why can't trolls tell time?
