About the translation of Beowulf. I have read the beginning of Heaney's, as well as the one here. My conclusion is preliminary, as I haven't finished either. But don't discount this translation --- the more I read it, the more I like. Indeed, I like it better than Heaney's, in some ways.<br><br>But the point about updating it is moot. The one here is by F. Gummere, dead in the 1930's, whose copyright has expired in 1993. Thus this is a public domain work. Heaney's translation is very much *not* in the public domain. I haven't found any other translations that are. So for free, this translation is the one you get.
