'The Mill on the Floss' is a complex novel which deals with issues that were obviously close to Eliot. Maggie is torn between her passion and her duty, between following her heart or following the conventions of society. She searches for an answer but the oppressive society in which she lives stops her from explore and having a deeper understanding of herself.
