I really can't understand why anyone would find this novel dull - I was absolutely captivated by it and couldn't put it down. The suspense and tension in the last few chapters had me riveted! I found Washington Square to be an intricate and absorbing look at families and the relationships that bind them together (and keep them apart). I thought it was easy to read and very cleverly done, with an ending that really leaves you aching with compassion for Catherine and wanting to slap her ridiculous aunt Penniman. I'm sure I will re-read this novel many times and am only sorry I didn't discover it sooner.
