I first read Washington Square some twenty years ago and while I can relate to the thought that it is somewhat difficult to read and has a style that is tedious and wordy, the characterizations I always thought were memorable. Recently I watched the Hollywood version in the film with Olivia DeHaviland and Montgomery Clift called The Heiress. I was impressed with the way the film portrayed these characters and hence decided to reread the book on line. The old fashioned wordy style is still the main difficulty for the modern reader, but the story and characterizations are still first rate. A must read.
