Because a piece of writing is descriptive, even overally descriptive, doesn't instantly mean it is bad writing. Look at Dickens and Steinbeck! James provides ambiguity through his tale that creates a myriad of responses from the reader, something he was striving for when he read it. It is a chilling tale, and my high school students who just finished in absolutley loved it with the exception of the ending. I think it is a very worthwhile read--the interpretations are endless.
