I find this book to be quite possibly one of the greatest books of all time. The thing about Joyce is you either love him or you hate him. I feel that his use of stream of consciousness is logical and brilliant. Though this work is not as hard to follow as his later work Ulysses I can see why others would have trouble. The novel at its inception is written from the brain of a child thus explaining the broken simple style. In his teen years he is overblown and mellodramatic as we all are when going through puberty. His thoughts aren't logical until the end of the novel after his point of self-realization. I love this book and think that even though it is slow in some areas it is still artfull and ingenious.
