This is one of my favourite books; it's humour reminiscent of that of Jane Austen whilst incorporating poignant almost desperate callings for truth and honesty. For me, the most significant moment is when Lucy is said to have 'joined the armies of the benighted'. What an acute perception of our society and how very tragic. Read this before watching the film.
