Tess of the d'Urbervilles is a truly terrible story. It haunted me for days after reading it.It is about two young men with a very unequal share of Victorian christian moral values;one with too much and one with too little, but both with hypocrisy in abundance. They inflict themselves on the heroine, the awesome Tess, with appalling and ultimately tragic consequences.Amongst other things the narrative also reveals the hopeless and often desparate situation of women in rural Victorian England.Had Tess never met either Angel or Alec her life would not have been much different.viz. Retty Izzy and Marian.
