In the novel, Brave New World, I am constantly being reminded of our own culture throughout the novel. There are many parallels between the world that Huxley created and our own, for example, the similarities between the hyponopaedia used in the novel, and our own forms of advertisement. In our own world we are constantly being fed information about how we should be living our lives through advertisement, which is being put out huge companies, to ensure we spend money on their products. Another example of how our society is closely related to the novel is in the way we view sex. In the Brave New World, the people have become totally de-sensitized towards the ideas of sex. There are no such things are monogamous relationships in the Brave New World, and to even think about having one threatens the stability of the world state. In our world, people have become de-sensitized towards sex by the amount that we see and hear in our television shows, movies and music. Even today it is becoming more and more socially acceptable to have non-monogamous relationships with different peoples. Another parallel that can be drawn between the novel and our own world is our dependency on drugs to ensure that we feel happy. In the novel there is soma tablets that can be taken to improve some ones mood, but in our own world we have Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, and Luvox. With our increasing dependency on these drugs we become more and more like the Brave New World, and we start to detach ourselves from our own emotions. The similarities between the novel and our own society are increasing in number, which is very scary.
