Bernard Marx's purpose in this book is very clear right from when he's first introduced. He is shown to be the most counter-cultural character in this book, but he's been this way his entire life. Bernard was very fortunate being born into the Alpha plus caste, however his physical size lowers his social status, and makes him a kind of outsider. He is always seen as alone, because, unlike everyone else in the world, he doesn't fit into a specific social class. Although Bernard is seen as the outsider, he seems to be the only person in the book who doesn't follow the mindset that has been made by the new world order. He shows this when he refuses to take the drug "SOMA" when Benito offered it to him. Benito thinks that the story about too much alcohol being put into Bernard's blood-surrogate must have been true.
