I remember reading this book in high school - and I loved it then. I just finished reading it again now and had precisely the same reaction this time around. Huxley was simply a genius - and way before his time.

I believe that we are already (have been for many decades) living lives very similar to the characters in this book. Mass production vs. mass consumption, the need to look and act according to social standards, the creation of "accepted" sociological and economic castes, starting with our schools and continuing through most employment (think about the grading systems, the child's self-esteem and the eventual acceptance of 'menial work'...), accepted levels of promiscuity, the loss of the family unit as more single-parent families emerge, mood-enhancing drugs, feel-good drugs, anti-depressant drugs...

We're already here in this Sad New World.
