The Idiot almost recalls the Prince's description of Natasya's face as supremely beautiful, but inspiring fear, even terror in him. After reading it, I was deeply moved by its subtle exploration of the themes of goodness and suffering, its well orchestrated development of plot, its vivid scenery, and its very personal characters. In the last respect, Dostoyevsky is a true master, creating characters so real in the mind, that one can empathize with them as much, if not more than, with real human beings, for his characters have more depth than most men and women. Yet despite the profound effect it had on me and the work's great beauty, I find myself almost afraid to pick it up again, to look at it.
