I feel that the start of the book is not borin, but actually intriguing to see Sherlock Holmes with Watson and his true ego shine through in his conversation. Also with Dr. Mortimor he feels not to kindly to his comment of him being the 2nd best detective in the world and his defensiveness shows true Holmes.

At first when you start to read the book it is very boring. It seems as though you dread continuing to the next page, and you minus well never finish it. But after all the clues, and the problem is stated you get caught on to the mystery and you can't put the book down because you don't know what's going to happen next. And believe me the ending was pretty suprising even though it fit well within the clues.
