I've read only her children's books, and this is very different. While loaded with Victorian sentimentality, it still expresses a powerful image of the elemental female spirit. The pagan Clo has to be Christianized by her sin; but, unlike most moralistic authors, Burnett allows her to get away with it! In our time, a case could have been made for self-defense, but I don't think that plea existed at the time. All in all, I liked it.
