A strange, frustrating book to read at first, but once the reader has become accustomed to the narrative technique its opaqueness can yield up many glimpses of something glittering behind the basic plot. Not so much about the sea as about the problem of ideals and stories: the stories we tell ourselves and each other abut who we are and how we should live our life, what happens when reality clashes with the story. Read it at night in the garden out loud...
