To answer your question about Ethan scorning Mattie, if it isn't too late, I think he did at the end. If you notice the trend of how Zeena helped than hindered Ethan, then Mattie came and light returned. Well, after the accident, Ethan loses all passion, but particularly that for people. He's almost interested in his science, but that's all. If he had maintained his love for her, he would probably a) not be quite as he was in general - maybe and b) show her at least civility more than he does. There is no love or kindness or caring of any shape or form in the Frome/Silver household in the end that I really noticed. Well, I've got to get to my own essay. Good luck.
