How many of us are aware of our choices? How many of us make choices without realizing the consequences. This story enables us to wish to make choices for the characters then leads us through the possible and probable consequences. Ethan does only what we all do, that is to imagine the best possible choice then reality brings him back. I especially loved the moment he realized that he would be willfully deceiving the Hales if he lied to get money from them. He then consciously became aware that if he did that he could no longer believe he deserved his choice. Deception! or awareness of the fact that ones choices for 'happiness' only goes as far as the respect for the choices of others. Otherwise one's own choice is tarnished and one risks to get what one deserves. That's why it is haunting. we are all tempted to use extreme measures to get what we want. If we don't compromise our selfworth, we can still hope to find a solution where our happiness doesn't cost the happiness of others. If we look only for immediate answers for what we want, we may ruin it.
