Thank God this book wasn't officially reviewed by highschoolers who were made to read it. This book did an excellent job of evoking emotion in the way that all great books do. The symbolism, setting, theme...all of these were as close to perfect as you will find in a novella such as this. As to the comments that this book was pointless, what point are you looking for in books? The point was to tell a story. It ended badly, yes, but I can't see how you would expect a happy ending from this setup. Maybe if Ethan had a little more backbone to run away with Mattie it would have ended nicely, but unfortunately, this is the theme of the entire book. It was beautifully written and it was an incredible story, which is why it is assigned in high school literature courses.
