Ethan frome is a book about lonelilness, isolation, sadness and desperation. The saddest part of this book was for Ethan there was no escape, he was to nice to up and leave his 'sick' wife the only way out for him was death and he couldnt even succeed in that. Winter is the main theme of this book, everything gets covered and burried by the snow, the whole book is almost based on arround a metaphore. although it is a short book there is so much subtext to it, that it takes hours to read. this is one of the first books i have read in english lit, that i have actually enjoyed. it soon became clear to me that Ethan did not love Mattie she was his escape, something that had not been burried by Starkfields winter, someone that was from the real world. Another point is that ethan had travelled he had been to florida, seen the world gone to college to train to be an engineer, but had to give all that up to look after Zeena, a woman who almost seems to repulse him. <br>
