To me one of the most moving moments in the book is when burdened by the loss of his son Siddhartha finally learns to empathise with the joys and sorrows of the ordinary people. up till this point he has been concious of his own superior spirituality and that, ironically keeps him away from what he desires the most, an understanding of the self.<br><br> with the loss of his son, he finally connects with the mass of humanity, symbolically represented by his being able to finally hear all the sounds f the river.<br><br> there is a potent message for all seekers:<br>" seek , but do not look down upon the travails of the ordinary folk"
