The heart of the story should be how good is the writing. I think it lacked at certain times, but since it was easy to understand, the message you get at the end makes you appreciate it more. Perhaps I am also a little bias because I prefer the American Literature period of the “Lost Generation” with writers such as Hemingway and books like the Great Gatsby. I still think this book held up well when comparing to them .
In the case of Siddhartha sometimes it is better just to read the story and let each individual take from it what they will. Over analyzing a book seems to make it seem dull even if you actually enjoyed it. So when reading Siddhartha take all the insights you can get from it and move on because trying to find an ultimate philosophy from it will only leave you with the spiritual emptiness the book warned against.
