Hesse does not give answers to life's questions. Rather, he poses them in a new way, and with each discovery poses new questions. The whole book is about one man's search for spiritual truth. Rather than tell you how life should be lived, he asks his own questions about life and explains how he found his answers. Throughout the story he reiterates the fact that truth for one man is different than that of any other man. The main theme is that one must discover for himself how to live his life, and what his own spiritual truth is. The book is beautifully written, and should be venerated as a masterpiece. It is a must read for everyone who is interested in bettering themselves or society, or can appreciate new (or old, just stated in a new way) ideas (or are those the same people?).
