"Siddhartha" is one of the most incredible novels ever written because of its universal meaning. Indeed, Hinduism and Buddism are in the background, but this novel can be interpreted from many differenty angles all relating to the central theme of the search for discovery and meaning. If all of the Hindu details were removed, this would still be one of the richest novels in print.. Sometimes I feel people loose this important aspect on Hesse's masterpeice.
