Somehow, I've made it through all of high school and three years of college without having read this book, and I could joyfully go the rest of my life without ever having read it. It's horrible. The premise is good, but Conrad falls into the post-Victorian trap of using "picturesque"(I'm being kind here) choices of vocabulary. The story drags when it doesn't skim over significant events entirely. I don't like Conrad's style of writing, I don't like Achebe's instistance on finding every little nuance racist, and I don't like the book in general. I'm an English major, and I swear by all that's holy if I ever end up teaching a literature course, this will NOT be on the syllabus!
