Although I found the book a very arduous read, at the end of it I couldn't help wondering if the really pompous use of big words was a tool used by Conrad to make us feel about the story the way Marlow felt about Congo?

The language definitely holds the reader at arm's length, as Marlow's prejudices and judgements held him at arm's length from actually experiencing his journey.

He starts off by saying that this was somewhere he'd always wanted to go, but then hardly mentions anything about the actual Congo.
I think Conrad wanted to get the point across to his readers that colonialism was not altruistic, but based on pure greed, but without offending them by taking a stand that racism is actually unacceptable as well. (perhaps trying to get one point across at a time). Or maybe he was just racist after all.
