I just finished this book for a 9th grade English project, and it was excellent. I had heard things about the book's graphic descriptions of the meat-packing industry, and by the way people talk, one would think that some dingy meat processing plant was the main character. Some may find it depressing, but I wouldn't want the book any other way. I doubt that Mr. Sinclair wrote the novel to show that with hard work and perseverence, a poor, uneducated immigrant family can come out on top in an unforgiving capitalist system. I would reccomend anyone with a conscience to read this book.
