I think Hugo did a great job at conveying appearance vs. reality. Though many of us didn't catch it, he threw it at us several times in the book. The concept is also such a simple one, that many of us dont consider it at all. When you think of a Catholic Archdeacon, we connect that with a decent man, Godly, honor, trust. But, when we think of a gypsy, first things that come to mind are theives, liars, and pardon my French, but skanks. This was not the case AT ALL. So many times in the book, Esmerelda and Frollo would meet and the theme of appearance vs. reality would be conveyed. Frollo was far from an honorable man. And esmerelda was a very decent woman, who had more morals than Frollo proved to hold. These two characters are just one example of appearance vs. reality in Hunchback. There are several more....go ahead...look.

I strongly disagree, she was in fact, a skank. She just threw herself at Phoebus, for whatever reason. She deserved her death.
