Since its publication in 1862, Les Misérables has been reconized as one of the world's literary masterpieces. Perhaps the reason it treamains so popular, even today, is because of its ability to dive deep into the hearts of its characters. For who can forget such people as the redeemed Jean Valjean, the determined Javert, the desperate Fantine, the innocent Cosette, the passionate Marius, the rogue Thenarder, or the lovesick Eponine? But it is not only these intense characters that bring the story to life. Even the smallest of Characters stand out (such as Bamatabois). Hugo breathed life not only into the largest parts, but the smallest. All the characters stand out in a vast tapestry of of amazing length and scale. Hugo shows a simple story in an outstandingly complex fashion, yet it is still readily understandable.

Les Misérables took Hugo nearly thirty years to write. He started work on it in 1845, and after a long pause, finished it in 1861. It is considered by most to be his greatest work, ranking even above his previous masterpiece, Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.) It functions as both a compelling story of fiction as well as a social history of 19th centure France. Undenably one of literature's greatest novels, It is an absoloute must read... For everyone, everywhere.

Please take time and visit my Les miserables web site, "Les Mis Online" at: http://www.lesmisonline.cjb.net/
