Hardy tries to catch and present people's lives from a somewhat pessimistic point of view. His characters are always missing their chance, their happiness by an inch and this could only make the reader feel very sorry for the main character even though they may tell a lie or even kill someone (Tess of the d'Urbervilles). Hardy's novels move me at every occassion.
