Eve Langley is known for provocative novels that involve gender-bending and picaresque adventures. In 'The Pea Pickers,' 1942 Prior Prize winner, and its sequel 'White Toupee,' Langley remained within orthodox boundaries. However, her third and potentially best work, 'Wild Australia,' is an outrageous parody of multiple shifts in time, space, gender and sex. In it, Langley uses a reincarnated Oscar Wilde to explore sometimes incongruous identity changes not meant to be taken literally. Her narrative efforts represent a challenge to current hegemonies precisely because of their peculiar flavor.
