THE title of this article could have been "What's New in Hip Surgery?" The answer - "hip resurfacing." Apparently it is the preferred surgical procedure of aging baby boomers in the US and UK who can't be delayed from the golf or tennis game one minute longer.

Hip resurfacing is not new. As early as the 1970s, bioengineers and surgeons thought that since only the surfaces of a joint are destroyed, it ought to be the only parts changed. However, the metal alloys then were not as sophisticated and friction generated a lot of metal bits. Soon ...
