NO DOUBT, it was a great idea for a musical - to combine the wit of Oscar Wilde with the unique song-writing talent of Mike Read.
Throw in the 150th anniversary of Wilde's birth and the West End might just have had another hit on its hand.
But the critics didn't agree.
One described it as 'bilge', another as 'two hours of leaden dross' and a show 'of exquisite awfulness'.
So when only five of the 466 tickets were sold for the second night, Read, 53, a former Radio 1 DJ, decided to close 'Oscar Wilde' after just one night.
