OSCAR Wilde's problem is that we know him too well: the centre- parting, voluminous necktie, witty bons mots, the dramatic genius, doomed homosexuality and ignominious end.

And, because of his diverse talents, he has become a figurehead for an equally varied group of followers: to gay-rights campaigners the first true martyr, to fops everywhere a sartorial lodestone, to interior decorators the pioneering visionary genius of minimalism.

Wilde died 100 years ago this year, and the centenary promises to bring another flurry of eager appropriations.
